CLASFON & EASTER

As we desire a new legal profession anchored on Christ, we need to know the truth as change agents. Change and transformation do not come on a platter of gold, one who desires to make a positive mark; must get ready for strong opposition. Truth is that those who may have benefitted immensely from the anomalies, ignorance and wrong systems in the society, will not give it up so easily, without a serious fight- even in the church, the legal profession inclusive. Change ambassadors are often mocked, betrayed, conspired against and often time assassinated. Only a few live to witness and enjoy the transformation they fought for. A change agent must understand his mission, focus on his vision and pursue it with determination, resoluteness and resilience; because the battle between good and evil is a tough one. Even Jesus seeing what awaits him, prayed, “My father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will. ”

The most painful part of the struggle for change; is the charismatic manipulation and exploitation of the majority; by the few who have economic, political and religious power to achieve their own ends. Most times to the disadvantage of the majority. Jesus was opposed, humiliated and killed by the Jewish leaders not because they were passionate about the enforcement of the Mosaic Law, which it seems Jesus teachings and actions were radically against, but for their personal interest and gain. If not, how would we explain what happened below.

‘It was the governor’s custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” for he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him. While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s sit, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him. But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.  ‘’ which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. Barabbas,” they answered. What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!”  “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”  When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said “it is your responsibility!’’ All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and our Children!” Then he released Barabbas to them. But had he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.’ (Matthew. 27: 15-26)

Just like the Chief priests and elders; who are devoid of godly principles, the crowd that celebrated Jesus but now asks for his execution because of the manipulation of their ignorance, Pilate, who lacked the Will to enthrone justice because of his future political interest. Today, we live in a country, where our leaders are devoid of godly principles, even with their religiosity, where Nigerians are exploited because of ignorance, those who know the truth and are in the position to effect change, lacks the Will because of numerous considerations. Those who preach against injustice and corruption, secretly and indirectly enthrone it. Where misconduct pay faster and our judicial machinery used to do injustice , where it is normal to grease some palms, if one must get what one is entitled to and where everyone who stands for what is right is considered a fool. These have led to the frustration of many who set out in pursuit of a better society to the point of joining the band wagon. Hence, the knowledge of the necessary requirements for a successful cleansing of the milieu, we intend to cleanse is pertinent, if we must succeed like JESUS whom we celebrate today; because a lot of persons who have set out to cleanse Nigeria, Nigerian Judicial system inclusive, no longer remember where they left their cleansing apparatus.

We must learn from Jesus; his submission to the will of the father even when he desired that the cup be taken away from him. The love for the actualization of salvation kept him going. We must understand the need for holistic preparation for our mandate .We must appreciate the fact that there may be temptations and trials but we can still win, we must be at home with the fact that it is easier to scream change than to be committed to bring it to pass, that the pursuit of change requires high level of commitment and sacrifice.

Consequently like JESUS , the need to raise vision bearers coupled with understanding, preparation, focus, determination, and resoluteness cannot be overemphasized. In fact they are indispensable qualities that must be imbibed by CLASFONITES; if we must succeed in positively transforming Nigerian Legal profession.
Finally, success is assured because JESUS never failed, he rose from death we shall rise above every opposition.
